Podcast Comparison
Elite Cosplay VS FlixWatcher
Common Elements:
Both have more than 1 presenter who is talking informally
(Elite Cosplay has 2 presenters and FlixWatcher has 4 presenters).
This is good because talking informally makes the podcast more engaging
in my opinion, because it makes it seem like an interesting conversation.
Both have presenters who seem fairly young when they are speaking to the
audience which is good, because having young presenters can attract more
younger viewers because the presenters will probably mention things which
young viewers enjoy (e.g. social media)
Both podcasts mention some form of social media.
(Elite Cosplay mention twitter and email at 01:04 to ensure that the audience has a
Mentioning social media is good because if the presenters want to attract a young audience,
social media can help with this since social media is very popular in this generation. Also, the way Elite Cosplay mentioned social media was good because it showed that they were taking the audience into consideration and ensuring they are involved. However, I didn't like the way FlixWatcher mentioned social media, because I feel as though they only did this for their own benefit.
Both don't have any vox pops in them. In terms of these Podcasts, I feel as though vox pops
weren't required because it was more group/partner talk but having vox pops can add some more positives about these podcasts.
Both have a target audience which isn't specific in terms of what gender can listen to them. This is good because it limits sexism and limits any negative comments towards the cast for both shows as well as it can attract more viewers.
What worked well:
Having young presenters who are speaking informally worked well, because this element personally kept me engaged throughout the entire Podcast and overall made the PodCast interesting because I felt as though I was involved in the conversation.
Mentioning social media worked well because this made me feel as though they are aware of what interests viewers of this generation which I personally find more engaging because mentioning social media represents that they are taking the audience into consideration.
The structure of the PodCasts worked well because personally, I feel as though the production wasn't staged in any way but also didn't sound as though they are making up what they are talking about, which is good because this means it sounded natural as a result which I found very engaging.
Introducing the names of all the presenters for both PodCasts worked well because this made me feel as though I am part of the conversation as well as it helped me understand a bit more about the presenters (they are all friendly people).
What didn't work well:
The lack of music and music choice for both PodCasts didn't work well in my opinion. For example, for Elite Cosplay, there was no music whatsoever, which I find a negative element because I feel that if the PodCast had a jingle or even subtle music in the background, this would've made the overall PodCast even better (even though it is already good). Also, for FlixWatcher, this PodCast does contain music for a good portion of the show, however, the jingle music is overlapped with the presenters talking which I personally felt it was more an advert than a PodCast which made it unprofessional in my opinion. Also afterwards, there was a straight transition with music after the intro which was okay however it could have been more subtle.
1) Have a jingle/background music
This makes a PodCast successful because it makes the audience engaged throughout the entire thing/straight away as well as it can be a type of backup plan so if things don't go well during the show (e.g. awkward pauses), this can save the day.
2) Have presenters with personality
This makes a PodCast successful because it ensures that the audience feels as though they are part of the conversation between the presenters as well as it keeps the audience engaged throughout the entire show.
3) Mention social media as a form of contacting the show
This makes a PodCast successful because mentioning social media proves that the presenters are aware of recent trends as well as shows that the presenters care about the audience and aren't making these PodCasts without a specific purpose.
4) Ensure you are talking informally
This makes a PodCast successful because having this element makes it easy to understand what the presenters are saying as well as limits the audience feeling bored or excluded while listening. (Personally, I find that listening to formal speech makes me bored after a while)
5) Have a structure
This makes a PodCast successful because having a structure ensures there are no breakdowns during the show (e.g. awkward pauses) and overall makes the performance more impressive because it shows that the presenters are concerned about the audience's entertainment and they aren't just doing this show to waste time.
6) Include Vox Pops whenever possible
This makes a PodCast successful because having this allows the audience to feel more included in the show because they are able to express their viewpoints on whatever topic they are talking about.
7) Have guests attend the show
This makes a PodCast successful because having guests can attract more viewers because it may be something which the show hasn't done before (this can especially attract more viewers if the guest(s) are famous because the viewers may be fans).
8) Have interviews with others
This makes a PodCast successful because if the person being interviewed has a different viewpoint from the presenters on the topic they are talking about, this can increase curiosity within the viewers as to what will the result be (will they agree with each other or start a debate). Also, having new people on the show is impressive in general because it is something new for the viewers to listen to.
9) Include a title which isn't aimed at a specific gender
This makes a PodCast successful because having this limits sexism and negative comments towards the presenters and cast as well as demonstrates that the shows want to attract a wide range of viewers and not limit the audience number.
10) Mention what you are going to talk about
This makes a PodCast successful because having a small introduction of what the presenters will talk about can immediately inform the audience whether this is the right PodCast for them as well as save the audience from wasting time.
